February 1990
According to official figures, 64,000 GDR citizens have left the country in February. Since the Wall came down, some 250,000 people have moved from the GDR to West Germany.
There is also a continued stampede of commuters and visitors to the West. West Berlin bears the brunt. Hundreds of thousands of East Germans and East Berliners flood the city every day, crowd public transport and shops – and libraries as well. The West Berlin State Library can barely cope with the rush of visitors.
