After long and expensive restoration efforts, the Semperoper in Dresden, which was badly damaged during the war, is reopened in the presence of SED leader Erich Honecker and former West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. Restoring the opera house is one of the vanity projects undertaken in the Honecker era.
