Members of GDR church-run peace groups, including the East Berlin pastor Rainer Eppelmann, publish an article, written in January 1986, in the West German news magazine "Spiegel". It calls for new travel regulations, democratic co-determination, the creation of a community-service option as an alternative to military service and the abolition of the penal code for political crimes.
