People killed at the Glienicke Bridge

The orange stele opposite Villa Schöningen recalls two fatalities at the Berlin Wall: Herbert Mende and Horst Plischke. Plischke drowned near the Glienicke Bridge while trying to escape on 19 November 1962. The case of Herbert Mende highlights the complete inhumanity and failure of the GDR regime. On 8 July 1962, Herbert Mende is stopped by two People's Policemen as he is coming out of a youth club. But Mende wants to catch the last bus home. As he runs off, he is fired upon. After two years in hospital, Herbert Mende is sent home as an invalid. He dies in 1968 as a result of his injuries.
