Klein Glienicke, a GDR exclave, was situated on West Berlin territory and could only be reached via Park Bridge. Non-residents had to apply for a pass to enter. Three roofers who were commissioned to repair the roof of the chapel on 7 May 1965 were given such a pass. They were guarded by two border soldiers. When one of the guards went away briefly, two of the workers took the opportunity to disarm the other border guard and escape over the Wall.
