In 1973, two brothers and their families dug a tunnel from the cellar of their house to West Berlin using just a child's spade and a spade without a handle. The authorities had classified the property as "an area not endangered by tunnels" because of the high water table. But the escapees waited patiently for a heatwave. The water table sank, making it possible to build a tunnel safely. The exit of the tunnel was only 80 centimetres behind the Wall. Altogether nine people managed to escape in the night of 25 -26 July 1973.
