At around 11 pm on 15 November 1968, Horst Körner is discovered by chance by two border guards on an inspection patrol in the border area of Klein Glienicke. They have seen him standing in his uniform behind a tree and at first thought he was the People's Policeman in charge of the section. When the border soldiers reverse back towards him and Horst Körner realises he has been found out, he opens fire on the army vehicle. Through the windshield, he delivers a constant volley of shots at the driver, Private Rolf Henniger. Henniger collapses behind the wheel, hit in the chest and head by several bullets. The other soldier has meanwhile left the vehicle and shoots down Horst Körner with several bursts of fire from his submachine gun.
